When Intelligence Outpaces Wisdom

AI and the Awakening Now Required

There are moments in history when something new enters the human story with such force that it exposes everything that came before it.

Artificial Intelligence is one of those moments.

It is not just another invention. Not another tool. Not even just another technological leap.

It is a mirror.

A mirror of human intelligence, yes - but more deeply:

A mirror of human consciousness. And what it is beginning to reveal is not just our brilliance……but our fragmentation.

Our speed without depth. Our power without wisdom. Our capacity to create without first understanding who - or what - we are creating.

In a recent conversation between Sam Harris and Tristan Harris - in an episode titled “Escaping an Anti-human Future” on Sam’s Making Sense podcast - this tension becomes unmistakably clear.

Sam Harris is a neuroscientist, philosopher, and long-form podcast host known for exploring questions of consciousness, ethics, and the future of humanity. In recent years, he has turned increasing attention toward the implications of artificial intelligence - not from a place of hype, but from a sober concern about its long-term impact.

Tristan Harris, a former design ethicist at Google and co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology, has spent the past decade warning about the unintended consequences of digital systems. He first came to wider public attention through the documentary The Social Dilemma, which exposed how social media platforms quietly shape human behaviour at scale. His focus has now shifted toward AI, which he sees as a far more powerful and potentially destabilising force. His recently released documentary is entitled The AI Doc.

Together, they are not speaking as outsiders or critics from the fringe. They are deeply informed, thoughtful voices, engaging seriously with what is unfolding.

And what emerges in their conversation is not panic, nor simplistic optimism. It is something more sober. More grounded.

They are, in many ways, standing at the edge of something - and saying:

“We are building something we do not fully understand, driven by forces we have not yet mastered, with consequences we may not be able to contain.”

And yet…

If you listen closely, what they are describing is not new. The language is new. The scale is new.

But the underlying issue? Ancient.

The Ancient Warning

Long before algorithms and data centers, the mystics spoke of a different kind of danger.

Not external. Internal.

From the early desert fathers of Christianity to the sages of the East, a single thread runs quietly through their teachings:

The unexamined self, given power, will distort the world.

They spoke of:

  • the false self

  • the ego’s need for control

  • the illusion of separateness

  • the restless mind that cannot be still

And they offered a simple, unsettling insight:

Without inner transformation, outer progress becomes unstable.

For centuries, this remained largely a personal teaching.

A path for monks, seekers, pilgrims.

Now… It has become civilizational.

Because we are no longer shaping small parts of the world.

We are shaping the systems that shape everything.

The Real Crisis

It is tempting to think the crisis is AI. It is not.

The crisis is: A mismatch between the power we have gained and the consciousness we have cultivated.

We have built extraordinary intelligence, but we have not cultivated equivalent wisdom.

We can generate answers instantly, but we struggle to sit in silence.

We can simulate understanding, but we have not learned how to be.

And so, the deeper question is not:

“Will AI become dangerous?”

The deeper question is:

“What kind of consciousness is guiding what we build?”

Because whatever we create will carry the imprint of the one who creates it.

The Illusion of Powerlessness

And here is where many people begin to lose heart. Because the story quickly becomes:

  • AI is controlled by a handful of powerful individuals and companies

  • The systems are too large to influence

  • The future is being decided somewhere else

And so, the conclusion quietly forms: “There’s nothing I can do.”

But that conclusion, while understandable…is not entirely true.

Because it assumes that the only meaningful influence is external.

Policy. Technology. Power structures.

The mystics would gently interrupt here.

And say: “You are looking in the wrong direction.”

Where Change Actually Begins

Every system humanity has ever created has been an expression of human consciousness.

Change the consciousness… and the systems begin to change.

Not instantly. Not easily. But inevitably.

This does not mean ignoring the external world. It means recognising something deeper:

The future is not only shaped by what we build. It is shaped by who we become.

And this is where hope quietly returns.

Because who you become… is not controlled by an oligarch.

A Way Forward - The Inner Work That Changes Everything

So, what can an individual actually do? Not in theory.

But in practice.

Reclaim Attention

In a world designed to fragment you, attention becomes a sacred act.

Every moment you:

  • step back from noise

  • resist compulsive scrolling

  • choose presence over distraction

…you are reclaiming your own mind.

This is not small. It is foundational.

Practice Stillness

The mystics did not begin with action.

They began with silence.

Even 10 minutes a day of:

  • sitting

  • breathing

  • allowing everything to settle

…begins to shift the centre of gravity within you.

From reaction, to awareness.

See the False Self

Notice:

  • the need to be right

  • the need to control outcomes

  • the subtle fear underneath decision-making

This is not about judgment. It is about seeing clearly.

Because what is seen clearly begins to loosen its grip.

Choose Depth Over Speed

The modern world rewards immediacy. Wisdom grows slowly.

Choose:

  • fewer inputs

  • deeper reflection

  • more time with what matters

This reorients your entire way of being.

Act from Grounded Presence

You do not need to change the whole system.

But you can:

  • speak differently

  • relate differently

  • lead differently

  • create differently

Every action rooted in awareness carries a different quality.

Stay Human

This may be the most important of all.

In a world of increasing simulation:

  • feel fully

  • love deeply

  • grieve honestly

  • remain open to Mystery

Because what the world most needs is not more intelligence.

It is more humanity.

The Quiet Revolution

None of this is dramatic.

It will not trend.

It will not dominate headlines.

But it is how every genuine transformation

has ever begun.

Quietly.

Within.

And over time…

It changes what is built,

what is valued,

what is possible.

And that is where I’m placing my hope.

Closing thoughts

This moment we are in is not just a technological threshold.

It is a human one.

We are being asked - perhaps for the first time at scale - to match our intelligence with wisdom.

Not perfectly.

Not all at once.

But sincerely.

And that…

is still within reach.

Bruce & Sue Reflect

Bruce:

So, the world’s worried about AI taking over…

Sue:

Mm. Fair enough too.

Bruce:

But sounds like the bigger issue is we’ve been a bit asleep at the wheel ourselves.

Sue:

That’s putting it kindly.

Bruce:

So, what do we do? We’re not exactly running Silicon Valley from the garden shed.

Sue:

No. But we are responsible for how we show up.

Bruce:

You’re saying… less panic, more presence?

Sue:

Exactly.

Bruce:

Bit underwhelming as a global strategy.

Sue:

Only if you think change starts out there.
